Brothers

We are not blood brothers

We are both adopted

We grew up together

as close as can be

the games we played,

the exploring we did.

We were always distressed when apart.

I liked food a lot,

My brother loved climbing

he taught me how

he helped me down more than once.

One day my brother went on a trip and did not return,

a sadness I did not understand seeped into our house.

I heard my brother from time to time

and caught a glimpse of him now and then

but I could never catch up with him after that day.

Early one spring morning I saw him by the pond

under the tea-house.

I ran out in joy.

This time we met and greeted each other,

he was different somehow

wiser and lighter but still with that twinkle in his eye

as he challenged me to a race down the driveway.

It was still a little dark

I ran after him at full speed

he was always faster

as we got to the top of the driveway

I felt I could catch up with him

I always had more endurance,

as we crossed the road

I did catch up with him.

All of a sudden there was a tremendous LIGHT

and a ROAR.

Then my brother and I were flying

together again into the dawns early light.

I can't believe that Silas is gone. Or did I misunderstand? Not meaning to pry in a time of sadness for your house.

Is he is gone, then we send our thoughts and purrs to you in your moment of loss.

OMG. I am in tears. I am so very sorry about Silas. I know it's not much consolation right now that he is with Fergus. So much has happened in your house the last few months - loss and new life. I guess it's just the way things work. I'm so sorry.

Poor Silas, my sympathies go out to you. Through your blog I've grown close to him, and loved hearing of his adventures. It is so sad that his adventures have ended here on Earth. I'm sure that he and Fergus are happy to be with each other again. Our cats are with us for too short of a time, and will always be in our hearts.

Mom's eyes are leaking. She read your poem to Dad. We're very, very sorry. First Fergus, now Silas. Your poem is beautiful, and that last picture of Silas is wonderful. I'm sorry that it turned out to be the last. We were enjoying reading about his fear of the kittens. Hold Brendan close, and Harper and Ramona too.

I would like to think that it did happen this way, that he saw Fergus and went to run with him and now they fly together. Probably the only comfort at all is that they are together. I don't know if I could go through this once, let alone twice so soon. We are grieving with you.
